Los Angeles Metro, Westside Purple Line Extension - Mobility on LVT tracks during the upcoming LA28 Olympics
The Low Vibration Track (LVT) technology was chosen as the track form for the further extension of the Purple Line in Los Angeles Metro. Since the beginning of 2025, LVT block assemblies have been seamlessly supplied from plants in the USA to the installation site in Los Angeles.
The Westside Purple Line Extension is one of Los Angeles’ most ambitious transit projects, designed to expand the Metro D (Purple) Line from Koreatown to Westwood. The recent completion of the twin-bored tunnels in sections 2 and 3 of the line extension adds over five miles (about 16 kms of track) of new subway service and four underground stations from Wildshire to Westwood, significantly improving connectivity to major job centers, medical facilities, and educational institutions.
The installation of the Low Vibration Track (LVT) technology, which is engineered to minimize noise and vibration in dense urban environments, particularly present in tunnels running beneath sensitive areas, contributes to the commitment of many metropolises worldwide such as Los Angeles to sustainable and high-performance transit infrastructure.
The trackworks are currently underway and are scheduled to be completed before the upcoming Summer Olympics taking place in Los Angeles from July 2028. When completed, the extension will allow riders to travel from Downtown Los Angeles to Westwood in just 25 minutes, while maintaining a quiet and smooth experience for both passengers and the surrounding communities.
